Meta, il futuristico progetto targato Facebook per la creazione di un universo virtuale, sta già muovendo i primi passi verso la sua realizzazione, ma lungo il percorso non mancano anche i problemi
Mark Zuckerberg non ha perso tempo: dopo soli pochi giorni dall’annuncio del rebranding della compagnia da Facebook Inc. a Meta Inc. sono già iniziate le prime manovre per dare vita a quello che sarà, a detta del magnate americano, “il futuro del web”. L’imprenditore di Menlo Park sembra quindi intenzionato a bruciare le tappe, ma non tutto sta andando secondo i suoi piani.
Novità in casa Meta
Come già annunciato durante la conferenza del 28 Ottobre lo scopo di Meta Inc. è quello di dare vita al cosiddetto Metaverso, un mondo virtuale immersivo nel quale proiettare – letteralmente – la nostra identità digitale. Stiamo parlando di qualcosa che, fino ad una decina di anni fa, era considerato pura fantascienza: capite bene dunque come, per realizzare una simile impresa, occorrano enormi sforzi sia in termini tecnologici che commerciali.
Se però c’è qualcosa che a Facebook non difetta di certo sono le risorse: tra capitali multimiliardari, esperti in ogni settore possibile e immaginabile, personale praticamente illimitato e tecnologie digitali all’avanguardia il colosso californiano dispone di tutti i mezzi necessari per trasformare la visione del proprio CEO in realtà… e quello che ancora non possiede può sempre procurarselo.
È questo il caso del recente accordo con AMD, multinazionale statunitense annoverata tra i leader mondiali nella produzione di CPU, i cui nuovi processori Epyc diverranno la base per i prossimi visori VR di Oculus. Anche sul lato pubblicitario Meta ha deciso di non farsi mancare niente e ha scritturato nientemeno che l’influencer Kabhy Lame, star di TikTok e attualmente uno dei volti più noti al mondo, che è divenuto così il primo testimonial ufficiale del nuovo brand.
Inevitabili problemi
Come ogni altro grande progetto, però, anche quello di Meta non poteva non andare incontro a degli imprevisti. Mark evidentemente non è l’unico a credere nel metaverso e Microsoft sembra avere tutta l’intenzione di dire la sua in proposito: è di pochi giorni fa , infatti, l’annuncio dell’integrazione della piattaforma Mesh in Teams per offrire agli utenti un’esperienza più immersiva dei tradizionali meeting.
La piattaforma, stando a quanto riportato, consentirà agli utenti di partecipare a riunioni virtuali in cui le persone possono incontrarsi rimuovendo la barriera tra reale e digitale. Mesh per Teams è quindi una sorta di “porta per il metaverso”, dove gli utenti interagiscono attraverso avatar 2D o 3D personalizzati. I partecipanti alla sessione potranno muoversi in spazi che riproducono l’aspetto degli uffici reali, mentre il software penserà a simulare le espressioni facciali e animare gli avatar, sincronizzando i movimenti della bocca digitale con quelli della voce reale.
Un altro piccolo incidente accaduto a Meta nei giorni scorsi riguarda, paradossalmente, il nome stesso della compagnia. Meta PCs, una piccola azienda con 25 dipendenti in Arizona specializzata nel settore gaming, afferma infatti di aver depositato la registrazione dell’omonimo marchio lo scorso agosto e adesso chiede ben 20 milioni di dollari per rinunciare ai diritti. Si tratta più che altro di un inconveniente che Zuckerberg può risolvere facilmente, sia pagando che affidandosi ai suoi avvocati, ma resta comunque curioso il fatto che una compagnia del calibro di Facebook non abbia verificato di avere l’esclusiva prima del cambio di facciata.
Meta verso il futuro
Le cose insomma stanno procedendo molto velocemente per la nuova creatura del re dei social e, nonostante qualche piccolo contrattempo, non sembrano esserci veri ostacoli sul cammino di Meta. Resta da vedere se i problemi legali di Zuckerberg e Facebook attualmente in corso peseranno sulla riuscita del progetto, ma per ora possiamo solo aspettare i nuovi sviluppi.
