Anche quest’anno è di nuovo Blue Monday, il giorno apparentemente più triste dell’anno. Quanto c’è di vero però in questa data e quanto è pura invenzione?
Siamo dunque entrati nella terza settimana di Gennaio: l’anno lavorativo è ufficialmente iniziato e le vacanze di natale sono ormai solo un ricordo. Già solo questo pensiero basta a infondere un senso di tristezza in chiunque, ma c’è addirittura qualcosa di peggiore in questo terzo lunedì del 2022, qualcosa che ha un nome ben preciso: Blue Monday. Oggi infatti è il “giorno più deprimente dell’anno“, che cade ogni terzo lunedì di gennaio stando almeno a quanto dicono gli “esperti”…ma cosa c’è di vero dietro questa data?
Le origini del Blue Monday
Sono ormai diversi anni che il “lunedì blu” fa parlare di sé in tutto il mondo. La definizione di “blue monday” nasce nel 2005 in Gran Bretagna. A parlarne per la prima volta è stato il canale televisivo Sky Travel, all’interno di un comunicato stampa nel quale si annunciava la scoperta dell’equazione per calcolare il giorno più triste dell’anno per gli abitanti dell’emisfero boreale. La paternità di tale formula viene attribuita al divulgatore e psicologo dell’Università di Cardiff, Cliff Arnall.
Il lavoro di Arnall mette insieme una serie di varianti che, a suo dire, darebbero vita a un sentimento di tristezza diffuso, comune a molte fasce di popolazione. Tra i fattori presi in esame troviamo le condizioni meteorologiche, la capacità di fronteggiare i debiti accumulati, il tempo trascorso dal Natale, il fallimento dei propositi del nuovo anno, i bassi livelli di motivazione e la sensazione di una necessità di agire. Da allora e fino ad oggi il concetto di Blue Monday è stato ripreso e diventato tendenza.
La verità dietro la teoria
L’intera idea rientra però nell’ambito della pseudoscienza: nessuno studio scientifico, infatti, ha mai confermato la teoria del Blue Monday. Al contrario sono molti gli studiosi che hanno smentito l’assunto di Arnall. Tra questi troviamo ad esempio il medico e divulgatore britannico Ben Goldacre, che ha smentito la validità matematica dell’equazione del Blue Monday, e il neuroscienziato Dean Burnett, che ha definito l’intero lavoro “farsesco”. La stessa Università di Cardiff, poco dopo i fatti, ha preso le distanze da Arnall.
Cosa c’è di vero quindi in tutta questa storia? Beh, dal punto di vista scientifico poco o niente: l’intera teoria del Blue Monday si fonda su una sovrasemplificazione. Esistono realmente soggetti che, durante il periodo in questione, risultano più sensibili e depressi: tra questi ad esempio troviamo chi è affetto da S.A.D., il disturbo affettivo stagionale. Si tratta però di numeri trascurabili, non tali da giustificare la teoria di Arnall in alcun modo.
Il Blue Monday nel marketing
Del resto però, le giornate come il Blue Monday sono per il marketing come il proverbiale maiale: di esse non si butta via niente. Tant’è che il giorno più triste dell’anno si è trasformato nell’occasione perfetta per le aziende per farsi pubblicità.
Le strategie devono adattarsi al brand, ma sicuramente tra quelle più gettonate dai grandi marchi c’è il real time marketing, grazie a cui strappare un sorriso nel famigerato giorno più triste dell’anno. Ne sono un esempio le campagne di Nutella o Zuegg che giocano sull’utilizzo dei loro prodotti per sconfiggere la tristezza.
Un’altra soluzione utilizzata spesso è infatti quella di presentare il proprio prodotto come la soluzione al problema del Blue Monday: e del resto si sa, quale rimedio migliore dello shopping?
Abbondano anche gli sconti a tema, soprattutto per i capi d’abbigliamento o per i cosmetici, che possono approfittare del colore blu per pubblicizzare i propri prodotti.
E dunque, sarà anche il giorno più triste dell’anno, ma perché non sfruttarlo?
